History of Islam in Togo
The Togolese Republic has an area of 56,785 sq km and its map is presented in Figure 3.2.12a. Togoland was taken in 1916 from Germans who occupied it since 1884 and split between the British and French. The latter became the nation of Togo after its independence from France in 1960. Islam entered here through trade as early as the fourteenth century. Estimate of the Muslim population was 30,000 or 3% of the total population in 1914 and 1951. According to census data, this number increased to 0.22 million or 11.6% in 1970, then 0.33 million or 12.2% in 1981 and 0.61 million or 15.7% in 2010 (age twelve and above). Islam is increasing rapidly in Togo, and there are reports of entire villages joining Islam as once.
Thus, assuming that the percentage of Muslims will continue to increase by one percentage point per decade, then the Muslim population is expected to exceed three million or 20% by 2050 and near seven million or 25% by 2100.
