History of Islam in Saint Barthelemy
Also known as St. Bart for short, was conquered by France in 1648, then sold to Sweden in 1784, then purchased back in 1878. It seceded from Guadeloupe in 2007 and remains an overseas collectivity of France. It has an area of 21 sq km comprises the main island surrounded by several much smaller islands. Its map is presented in Figure 5.3.5. As shown in Table 5.3.5, estimates of the Muslim population increased from none in 1999 and before to six or 0.07% in 2008.
Thus, assuming that their number will increase by one tenth of a percentage point per decade, then the Muslim population is expected to remain less than one hundred throughout this century, reaching 1% of the total population by 2100.
